Tip of the Magic Hat #13

Welcome to another installment of Tip of the Magic Top Hat, a series where I will share my favorite MTG related articles or other content.  Topics will vary from week to week but will likely include things like, MTG Comedy, Strategy, Limited Play, MTG Community, MTG Finance, etc.

#1 Fate Reforged Spoiler – Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Category: Spoiler, Fare Reforged

This one is the real deal and he looks sweet.  Much better than the previous and now known fake that was leaked earlier.

#2 Heroes and Villains at Wizards of the Coast

Category:  MTGO

The love hate relationship with Magic Online continues - we love the Magic part but hate the online part.  I think this article does a good job discussing the issue.

#3 Rule of Law – Don’t Let Cheaters Back In

Category:  Community, Cheating
By
A contentious article and view point for a contentious topic.  I am inclined to agree with Matt on this, playing Magic in competitive events is a privilege.  Cheating hurts the whole Magic community and should receive the strongest punishments.

Thanks for reading, check back next week for more great MTG articles, podcasts, and other MTG content.

A must read if you are into competitive play.  The short version - failing to reveal a morph at the end of the game is now only a warning.  The game needed this change and I am glad the penalty could be adjusted.  Worth a read for all you Melvins.

A compelling argument in favor of bringing back Snow-Covered lands.  I couldn't agree more.  They are a icy blast from the past and full of flavor!

This has been a relatively new discovery for me.  so far I have really been impressed with Judge's Corner on GatheringMagic.com.  I have learned a lot about complex rules interactions.  This episode was definitely eye opening regarding State-Base Actions in the game.

An interesting question.  Is a casual magic player one who is more interested in having fun than winning even if they spend lots of time and money doing so?  Is it possible to be a hard core EDH player is in it only for the fun of the game?

PTQ - Boxborough - Worst Magic Experience Ever!

I went to PTQ Boxborough over the weekend and had the worst experience I have ever had.  I just sent this to Wizards of the Coast event feedback regarding the event:

This was definitely the worst Magic experience I have ever had.  As this was my second PTQ ever I am questioning if I should continue to pursue competitive magic.

I started off excited to go despite the 2.5 hour drive.  The deck registration and building was well organized although chit-chat from store employees was distracting.  I lost round 1 but it was close and my opponent was nice.  I won round 2 so things were even looking up.  Round 3 was a very close match and despite losing I thought I was holding my own.  Then the event took a turn for the worse.

The event organizer got on the loud speaker and announced that there were software issues and the delay would be at least 30-45 minutes.   “Sorry,” he said, but he wasn’t really that apologetic.

After about an hour he got on the loud speaker again and said there would be at least another 30-45 minutes still since, “the system ate the tournament, sorry.”

After waiting a little while longer and finishing up a round of cards with friends, my girlfriend and I (who was playing too and also 1-2) were wondering if we better just get on the road, since we had no idea how long it was going to take and we still had a 2.5 hour drive.  We went to ask if there was any ETA on getting things fixed but the tournament organizer, staff, and judges didn’t seem interested in taking any questions.  After feeling ignored we simply left.

I’ve been playing Magic my whole adult life, I started back in 1993. For the most part I have only played with friends and family at home.  I’ve had years of fun doing so and recently have branched out to playing at FNM and now PTQs.  However, I am now seriously questioning if I should continue to play outside of the home and with close friends.  If this is considered an acceptable or even common experience than this is not something I would do again.

Being out $80 for the two of us, driving 5 hours round trip and only getting to play 3 rounds of Magic was the worst Magic experience I have ever had.

3-0 for Flying Crane Technique - MTGO Khans of Tarkir Draft 11/09/2014

              The Draft

This draft started off with a first pack first pick End Hostilities. Ironically, I never cast the thing the entire three rounds.  I had it in my hand once or twice but it was never a good play.  I got a Warden of the Eye early as well as Flying Crane Technique and was solidly in Jeskai early in pack one.  A very late Warden in pack two was a good sign things were open for me.

              Rounds 1 and 2

I had a little land trouble in round one game one and lost.  Game two and three were not too difficult and I was on to round two. My next opponent had a decent deck but a well timed Flying Crane Tech finished him off.  In the finals I faced a killer Temur deck with two Snowhorn Riders.

              The Finals

It was a super close match with me winning a hard fought game one and and losing in a route in game two.  It was down to the wire in game three and I was getting low on clock.
Late into game three it seemed like I couldn't lose, I played Flying Crane Tech with a Bloodfire Expert and a Watcher of the Roost out for lethal... but he played Force away to bounce my Bloodfire Expert and go to 3.  He plays a shelter land (going to 4) and cracks back with his Wooly Loxodon and Pinewalker taking me to 4!  On my turn draw a Jeskai Student, not exciting but at it is a creature!  This way I can safely attack with the Watcher of the Roost for two, taking my opponent to two, and playing two chump blockers (I still have my Bloodfire Expert he bounced earlier).  I do this confident that I can win with this strategy. My opponent cracks back and I chump as planned.  Everything is going well except he hasn't conceded yet... so I attack with the now lethal Watcher and... he plays Drangonscale Boon to untap a blocker, but this time I have Force Away to win the game!

                    By: Danny Brown
A great look at the value of Swiss Drafts on MTGO.  I completely support this strategy of drafting on MTGO.  The best way to learn a new set is by playing the set, so make sure to get you money's worth in the beginning of a new set and play Swiss.  Then once you have the experience and skill move on to 8-4's.  Never play 4-3-2-2's.

This is Danny Brown week I guess.  He is one of my favorite MTG Finance writers.  While I don't subscribe to Quiet Speculations insider articles (so don't worry anything I post here will be from their free content) I do frequent the site.  The tend to post short but interesting and useful articles in their free content section and this is no exception.

Seems like the topic of sexism in the gaming world and in the MTG community is alive a strong.  I thoroughly support the Lady Planeswalker Society (and am a member myself along with my girlfriend).  While I don't think sexism is confined to gaming culture we can certainly do better.  I believe that full acceptance of female gamers is coming and soon - at least my the majority of the community.

                      By: Mike Cannon

I read this article and ended up running this deck at my local gaming store's Game Day event.  I made a few improvements over the list Mike has here (improved mana base by running 4x Mana Confluence, 4x Battlefield Forge, 4x Temple of Triumph and no shelter lands).  It did ok but not great.  Throughout playing it I noticed that Akroan Crusader was better than Satyr Hoplite in the deck and I ended adding it Glimpse the Sun God for Sunday's Game Day event.  Turns out Yoshihiko Ikawa figured out a much better version which you can find here.

                          #1) KTK Draft: Durdling 101

                          By: Jacob Van Lunen
A little old, as it is from 9/26, but I wanted to include it as I thought it an interesting perspective on drafting Mardu.  Also, love the title.

#2) Team Building - Design for Multiplayer

Category: Magic Design, Multiplayer, Commander, Conspiracy

Ok, another one that is technically not from this week.  But I've been meaning to post a link to this article for a while so here goes.  This is a retelling of one of the coolest drafts I was involved in at my local game store. It was release weekend of Conspiracy and my first taste of the fun and exciting format.  Evan is a great guy and regularly writes for Cardshark.com so I will be adding a feed to the blog for his articles.

                          #4) Beta Booster on Openboosters

Since most of this weeks posts are not actually from this week, including this one, I figured I add a four.  Definitely worth a watch... think Magical Masterbation... ;-)

                            #1) Five Myths About Drafting

                            By: Jacob Wilson
A great article that covers some of the common pitfalls many drafters, even some pros, can fall into from time to time.  A great read and could definitely improve your game.

#2) Format Solved: MTG Nation Already Sick Of Standard

                            By: The Weekly Mulligan
Hilarious!  Also, one of the main reasons I hate constructed.  Forget standard, just draft!
